{"id":4464,"date":"2010-03-18T17:50:00","date_gmt":"2010-03-18T11:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chtnews.com\/english\/?p=4464"},"modified":"2023-02-01T17:51:32","modified_gmt":"2023-02-01T11:51:32","slug":"recognise-traditional-land-rights-before-settling-land-disputes-updf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chtnews.com\/english\/2010\/03\/18\/recognise-traditional-land-rights-before-settling-land-disputes-updf\/","title":{"rendered":"Recognise traditional land rights before settling land disputes: UPDF"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>chtnews.com<\/strong><br>News No. 62\/2010, March 18, 2010<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The United People\u2019s Democratic Front (UPDF) in a statement today urged the government to enact legislations recognising the traditional land rights of the Jumma people and settle all land disputes in CHT on the basis of that law.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Terming the invitation of applications for settlement of land disputes from the aggrieved persons as \u201cputting the curt before the horse\u201d UPDF president Prasit Khisha said, \u201cthe government must at first set the basis on which to settle the disputes. In other words, the laws or policy guides must be framed before adjudication of a lawsuit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He expressed fear that \u201cmany Jumma people will not be able to get their lands back if the land disputes are settled in accordance with existing laws of the country. This is because although they are the real owners of the land as per the customary laws prevalent in CHT, they lack title deeds issued by the government.
