{"id":5452,"date":"2025-09-29T23:39:58","date_gmt":"2025-09-29T17:39:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chtnews.com\/english\/?p=5452"},"modified":"2025-10-01T23:51:18","modified_gmt":"2025-10-01T17:51:18","slug":"armys-statement-is-a-falsehood-and-a-failed-attempt-to-cover-up-their-own-crimes-updf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chtnews.com\/english\/2025\/09\/29\/armys-statement-is-a-falsehood-and-a-failed-attempt-to-cover-up-their-own-crimes-updf\/","title":{"rendered":"Army\u2019s Statement is a Falsehood and a Failed Attempt to Cover Up Their Own Crimes: UPDF"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Khagrachari\u00a0Correspondent, CHT News<br \/>\n<\/strong>Monday, 29 September 2025<\/p>\n<p>United People&#8217;s Democratic Front (UPDF) spokesperson Aongay\u00a0Marma\u00a0has rejected the Bangladesh Army\u2019s statement regarding the &#8220;communal violence in Khagrachari and Guimara on 27 and 28 September&#8221; as \u201ca fabrication and a failed attempt to cover up their own crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a press statement issued to the media today (Monday, 29 September 2025), he said,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Bangladesh Army has attempted to mislead the public with false information about the attacks in Khagrachari and Guimara. This will have a negative impact on the already volatile situation in the hills and will encourage the attackers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Holding the commanders of the two army brigades in Khagrachari and Guimara regions, their local proxy vigilantes known as the\u00a0\u2018Mottaleb Bahini\u2019, and extremist settler groups responsible for the communal attacks, killings, looting, and arson targeting hill people, Angya Marma stated:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe communal attacks were deliberately incited by the settler groups to derail the ongoing mass movement demanding justice for the gang-rape of a Marma teenage girl in Singinala and to protect the rapists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sequence of Events<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Highlighting the sequence of the events, Aongay Marma said:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li>On\u00a0<strong>23 September<\/strong>, an 8th-grade Marma girl was gang-raped in\u00a0Singinala, on the outskirts of Khagrachari town.<\/li>\n<li>In protest, under the banner of the\u00a0\u201cJumma Chhatra Janata\u201d<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>(Jumma Student-People), locals organized a rally in Khagrachari on\u00a024 September, announcing a 3-point protest program:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>Half-day road blockade in Khagrachari on 25 September.<\/li>\n<li>Grand rally on 26 September.<\/li>\n<li>Class boycott in schools and colleges from 25\u201327 September.<br \/>\nThese were all successfully held.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li>On\u00a0<strong>25 September<\/strong>, after the successful road blockade, at around 8:30 PM, army personnel publicly humiliated and forcibly dragged protest leader\u00a0Ukkyanu Marma\u00a0into a vehicle and took him to the Khagrachari Army Zone Headquarters.<br \/>\nIn response, residents immediately took to the streets. The army was forced to release him around 10:30 PM due to public pressure.<\/li>\n<li>On\u00a0<strong>26 September<\/strong>, during a grand rally at\u00a0Chengi Square, organizers announced a full-day district-wide road blockade for 27 September.<\/li>\n<li>On\u00a0<strong>27 September<\/strong>, in an attempt to sabotage the blockade, extremist settlers were deployed. Initially, they tried to provoke confrontations in\u00a0Khejurbagan, but failed. Later, under heavy army presence, settlers launched communal attacks in\u00a0Mahajan Para\u00a0and\u00a0Yong-daw Buddhist Monastery\u00a0areas.<br \/>\nIn Yongd Monastery, three hill residents were brutally injured with sharp weapons.<br \/>\nWhen the attackers attempted to attack the monastery itself, one army personnel firmly restrained them.<br \/>\nAngya Marma praised this soldier&#8217;s professionalism, stating,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cIf other army personnel had shown the same professionalism and neutrality, the hill people could have been protected from these attacks.\u201d But he lamented that such professionalism was rare.<\/p>\n<p>Given the\u00a0ongoing biased and communal behavior\u00a0of the army towards hill people in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT),\u00a0Jumma Chhatra Janata\u00a0was compelled to announce an\u00a0indefinite road blockade\u00a0from 28 September onwards.<\/p>\n<p><strong>28 September Incidents<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Aongay Marma stated:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li>On the morning of 28 September, during the blockade, army personnel raided several villages in\u00a0Perachara\u00a0and\u00a0Bhaibonechara, arresting three people including a school student and assaulting a rural healthcare provider and a government college lecturer.<\/li>\n<li>Around\u00a012 PM, in\u00a0Ramesu Bazaar\u00a0of Guimara (a Marma-majority area), the\u00a0army, Mottaleb Bahini, and extremist settlers\u00a0launched an\u00a0unprovoked attack\u00a0on hill residents.<br \/>\nThe army and their thugs indiscriminately opened fire, while settlers looted shops and homes before setting them on fire.<\/li>\n<li>According to the\u00a0Khagrachari administration, at least\u00a0three hill people were shot and killed\u00a0in the attack. They are:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>Thwaiching Marma (25)\u00a0\u2013 son of Hlacha Marma, from Bottola Para, Hafchhari, Guimara. A driver by profession.<\/li>\n<li>Akhro Marma (24)\u00a0\u2013 son of Aparu Marma, from Saingguli Para, Baropilak, Guimara.<\/li>\n<li>Athwipru Marma (26)\u00a0\u2013 son of Thwaihla Aung Marma, from Lichu Bagan, Hafchhari, Guimara.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li>Over\u00a030 people were injured, some critically.<\/li>\n<li>The attackers burned\u00a0at least 16 homes, 50 shops, one Mahindra vehicle, and 16 motorcycles\u00a0belonging to hill people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Response to Army\u2019s Statement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Aongay Marma refuted the army\u2019s claim that UPDF members fired shots from the western hills of Ramesu Bazaar at army personnel and civilians. He said: \u201cThis is utterly false. No sensible person would believe such nonsense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also questioned the army\u2019s claim that UPDF \u201coutsiders\u201d set fire to homes and clashed with Bengali settlers:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the fires were started by so-called UPDF outsiders, what were our so-called \u2018patriotic\u2019 army personnel doing at the time? Were they asleep with oil on their noses?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHow could UPDF members dare to set homes on fire right under the army\u2019s nose? And if the clashes had started\u00a0<em>before<\/em>\u00a0any firing by UPDF, then what were the army personnel doing at that time?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to him, \u201cThose who committed arson were not UPDF members. They were settler thugs deployed by the army to incite riots. With direct provocation and support from the army, they looted and burned Marma homes and shops.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aongay Marma accused the\u00a0Khagrachari and Guimara brigade commanders\u00a0of extreme bias and hostility toward hill communities, and demanded their\u00a0immediate withdrawal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDF\u2019s 8-Point Demands to the Government<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To resolve the situation, the UPDF spokesperson made the following demands:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Establish a high-level judicial investigation committee with UN participation\u00a0to investigate the communal attacks in Khagrachari and Guimara.<\/li>\n<li>Arrest and prosecute those involved in the gang-rape in Singinala\u00a0through a fast-track court.<\/li>\n<li>Arrest and punish the army personnel, Mottaleb Bahini vigilantes, and settlers involved\u00a0in the Ramesu Bazaar attack.<\/li>\n<li>Provide adequate compensation\u00a0to the families of the deceased and injured, and ensure proper medical care.<\/li>\n<li>Arrest and prosecute the settlers\u00a0involved in the Mahajan Para and Yongdaw Monastery attacks, and ensure medical care for the victims.<\/li>\n<li>Immediate and unconditional release\u00a0of all those arrested.<\/li>\n<li>End indiscriminate raids, harassment, and arrests\u00a0of activists and common people in their homes.<\/li>\n<li>Stop anti-Jumma community propaganda\u00a0in print, electronic, and social media.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Regarding Arms Seizure and Past Incidents<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Aongay Marma also dismissed as baseless and conspiratorial the army\u2019s claim of recovering a cache of local weapons (e.g. machetes) from UPDF at the BGB\u2019s Kaptai checkpoint on 28 September.<\/p>\n<p>He further criticized the army for distorting the\u00a0September 2024 attacks\u00a0in Dighinala, Khagrachari, and Rangamati \u2014 where hill people&#8217;s homes, shops, and businesses were burned \u2014 and blamed the UPDF for them. He called this: \u201cAn attempt to turn day into night and white into black.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe failure to publish the investigation report on the 2024 attacks and bring the perpetrators to justice has emboldened army personnel and extremist settlers to repeat such attacks in Khagrachari town and Ramesu Bazaar,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>In conclusion, Angya Marma remarked:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith few exceptions, most commanders and personnel of the security forces deployed in the CHT are biased in favor of settlers, hostile towards hill people, and communal in their mindset.
