A member of the United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF) was arrested by army yesterday in Matiranga under Khagrachari district.
A UPDF press release said its member Beauty Chakma (25) son of Chironjeeb Chakma of village Beltoli Para in Laxmichari Sadar Upazila was arrested from Kathalpara under Matiranga area No. 10 at around 10am.
He was on his way to attend a meeting with the villagers.
The soldiers picked him up and then took him to the camp, where he was beaten up badly. Thereafter, he was handed over to Matiranga police station.
A case was filed against him under Speedy Trial Act and sent to Khagrachari jail.
Ujwal Smriti Chakma, chief organiser of UPDF Khagrachari district unit, condemned the arrest of Beauty Chakma and demanded his immediate and unconditional release.
He also urged the authorities concerned to stop indiscriminate arrest and torture and harassment of UPDF members.
