Bengalee settlers have forcibly occupied six shops belonging to Jumma people in Baghaihat bazaar in Sajek, sources say.
This comes barely two weeks after the deadly attacks on 11 Jumma villages in the area that saw the death of two Jumma villagers and burning down of nearly 500 houses.
The shops had remained closed since those attacks.
“The settlers just broke into the shops and occupied them.” a UPDF activist quoted one of the owners of the shops as telling him.
Most of the shops sell grocery, he added.
“This (illegal occupation of the shops) began to take place early in the morning today. They (settlers) occupied the shops and sat there as if they were the owners.” he said.
The owners of the shops are Sneha Kumar Chakma son of Bujyagula Chakma, Binoy Chakma son of Amar Kanti Chakma, Motilal Chakma, Nirupon Chakma son of Shankar Chakma and Chitta Ranjan Karbari son of Kamal Karbari from Guchchagram and Binoy Chakma son of Bijoy Karbari of Daney Baibachara.
Both these villages were affected during the 19-20 February attacks by the army and settlers.
