Army loots UPDF office at Swanirbhor

The United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF) has alleged that on the night of 25 February the joint forces had broke into its office at Swanirbhor and took away valuable documents of the party.

The action of the joint forces took place during a night-time curfew imposed immediately after the arson attacks on Jumma-inhabited areas in Khagrachari town on 23 February.

“The soldiers also torn into pieces the UPDF flag and snapped the telephone wire. No body was there in the office during the raid.” UPDF’s Khagrachari District Unit leader Niron Chakma said, adding that they could not open their office for the last few days since the attacks for fear of arrest.

He also gave a list of articles taken away from the office by the army personnel. The list includes the following:

  1. A box file containing important documents relating to UPDF and its front organisatoins.
  2. Half a dozen plastic chairs.
  3. One piece of stapler.
  4. Books:
    1. Life is not ours, a report on CHT by CHT Commission, Bengali edition, one copy.
    2. Ami Bidrohi (I am a rebel) edited by Hill Students Council, one copy.
    3. Paharer Ruddha Kantha (Repressed voices of the Hills) and Kalpana Chakar Diary (Diary of Kalpana Chakma), edited by HWF, one copy each.
    4. Phirey Dekha Nirbachon 2001 (Looking Back Election 2001) five copies.
    5. Constitution of UPDF, English and Bengali edition, one copy each.
    6. Paper clippings on democratic activities of the UPDF, spiral binding, one copy.
    7. Compilation of leaflets and booklets issued by UPDF on various occasions, one copy.
    8. Challenge, Special Election bulletin, compiled. one copy.
    9. Issues of Pitribhumi (Fatherland), a bulletin in Bangla) compiled. One copy.
    10. Then and Now, a report on Human Rights violations in CHT, published by New Delhi based Asia Centre for Human Rights.

Niron Chakma condemned the action of the joint forces as hooliganism and an act of robbery and urged them to return the looted documents and other articles.
