Photo exhibition on Sajek and Khagrachari attacks held

A photo exhibition on the recent attacks on Jumma people in Sajek and Khagrachari was held today on Dhaka University campus.

Inaugurated by Dr. Akmal Hossain, professor of International Relations Department at Dhaka University, the exhibition put a total of 109 photographs on display.

The exhibition was sponsored by Students Unity Against Imperialism, an alliance of left leaning student organisations of Bangladesh.

In his inaugural address, Dr. Akmal Hossain said the persecution of the Jumma peoples in the CHT began in the 1960s with the construction of the Kaptai dam.

Condemning the recent attacks on Jumma people in Sajek and Khagrachari he said, “The oppressors should be resisted both in the plain land and in the hills.”

Presided over by Thuiko Ching Maram, Organising Secretary of the Hill Students Council, the inauguration was also addressed by Faizul Hakim, General Secretary of Jatiya Mukti Council; Ashidh Sharma, convenor of Biplobi Chattra Sangha; Krishan Roy, Publicity and Publication Secretary of Jatiya Chattra Dal; Zaeed Hossain, professor of Applied physics, Dhaka University and publication and publicity Secretary, Sangskritir Naya Setu; Prince Mahmood, organiser of Lamp Post and Ripon Chakma, member of Sajek Land Protection Committee.

Shamiul Alam Richi, President of Bangladesh Chattra Federation, moderated the discussion.

The exhibition attracted a huge number of spectators, mostly students, many of whom signed the comment book placed at the venue.

Of the 109 photographs on display, 36 were taken in Sajek one day after the attack. Photographs of the protests and demonstrations around the world against the attacks were also included in the exhibition.

The organisers hope to hold similar exhibitions in other educational institutions.
