An attempt by army personnel to arrest a Jumma shopkeeper at Gangaram Doar in Sajek failed as the Jumma women resisted.
According to a Sajek resident, a group of army personnel from Baghaihat zone went to Gangaram doar and tried to pick up one Nilok Shanti Chakma, age 28, son of Mere Singh Chakma from his shop. This happened at about 8pm.
The Jumma women resisted when the soldiers were taking him away by the scruff of his neck. As a result, the soldiers were forced let him go.
The incident took place within hours of a meeting in which the Commanding Officer of Baghaihat zone discussed the need for reopening Baghaihat High School which remains closed since the attacks on 11 Jumma villages in Sajek in February.
In the meeting, the Jummas demanded security for the students in the wake of an incident in January in which the Jumma students and teachers were held hostage inside the school house by Bengali settlers.
The CO is reportedly vague in assuring security for the students, and merely said “It will be okay and nothing will happen to them.”
