The five Democratic Youth Forum members arrested on 30 August in Khagrachari have been released.

DYF sources said Mongpru Marma (22), Rajeeb Chakma (19), Samar Jibon Chakma (20), Rubel Chakma (18) and Mithun Chakma (18) were released yesterday, 31 August, after being detained for about 20 hours in Khagrachari Police station.

In the police station the police had searched their bags and found a documentary film on the February attacks on Jumma villages in Sajek and Khagrachari titled “Hill in Flames”. The film is produced by Hill Watch Human Rights Forum.

The DYF members were taking 100 copies of the documentary CD along with them to Belaichari.

The police did not return those CDs while releasing them.

PCP leaders released in Naniachar

The Hill Students’ Council (PCP) leaders arrested in Naniachari on 23 August were also released on bail.

The court in Rangamati on 29 August granted bail to PCP Naniachar branch President Bilash Chakma, Assistant General Secretary Bablu Chakma and ex-president of Naniachar college unit, Tapu Moni Chakma.

They were arrested by army while making preparations for holding a rally in Naniachar.

The army took them to Naniachar zonal camp, beat them up and then handed over to the police.

A case was filed against them under section 54 of the Criminal Procedure Code which gives police sweeping powers to arrest any one on mere suspicion.
