AN army officer posted in Belaichari zone under Rangamati district has asked the United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF) to shut down its office at Belaichari bazaar, UPDF sources said.
One Major Sayeed, the second-in-command of Baghaichari zone (27 Bir), yesterday called Sagor Chakma and Biro Moy Chakma, president and vice-president of Democratic Youth Forum Belaichari Unit respectively, to his camp and asked them to shut down the office, UPDF leader Mikel Chakma told chtnews.com.
“Your party is not registered and so it is illegal. Therefore, you will not be allowed to open the office from now on.” Sayeed is reported to have told the DYF leaders.
However, the DYF leaders took exception to his views and said, “We have launched the office with permission from the local administration. There is question of UPDF being illegal. We are carrying out our activities following democratic norms and practices.”
When the Major failed to counter their arguments, he became furious and said he did not care about logic.
He threatened them, saying, “When I beat you to a pulp and send you to jail, then you’ll know what’s what.”
