AN ARMED gang loyal to Santu group shot dead a former member of the Jana Samhati Samiti (JSS) in Baghaichari under Rangamati district, UPDF and other sources said.
The victim has been identified as Nabo Bikash Chakma alias Nobel (45) son of Ram Kamal Chakma.
He was a village doctor and a former member of the JSS. He returned to normal life after the signing of the CHT accord in 1997.
The Prothom Alo in a report today has mentioned him as a member of the UPDF. However, UPDF sources said he had never been a member of their party although he had supported the view that there should be a peaceful settlement of the intra-Jumma conflict.
The killing took place in the village of Dolu Bonya under Bongol-toli Union at 10pm yesterday, 23 January.
According to sources, Nobel was watching TV along with his family members when Santu group men led by Barun Chakma raided his house and opened fire, killing him on the spot.
The assailants left the scene after making sure that he was dead.
The reason for the killing could not be known. However, some attributed it to his personal feud with some of the Santu group men who had joined it a few months ago.
In another incident, on 21 January, Santu group men shot at Bakul Chakma, a member of the JSS (M N Larma faction) at Char Kilo area in Baghaichari. However, he was able to escape unhurt.
