News No. 54/2013, Saturday, May 25, 2013TWO members of the United Peoples’ Democratic Front (UPDF) have been arrested in a military raid in Ramgarh under Khagrachari district, UPDF and police sources have said.
The arrest was made in the small hours today (3am), Saturday, during a raid by a group of army from Guimara Brigade in the village of Chenguli Para.
The UPDF members – Sajai Maung Marma, 35, son of Aung Kyojai Marma of village Hafchari and Monindra Kishor Tripura, 34 son of Sachindra Lal Tripura from Dhamai para village, Matiranga – were arrested from the house of Kala Marma in the village.
The soldiers also beat up Kala Marma’s 18-year old son Hla Thoai Marma after tying him with ropes.
Thereafter they took him and his mother Akra Marma along with UPDF members, but released them, except UPDF members, halfway through to the camp.
Later the army handed them over to the police after placing homemade guns in their hands.
The UPDF has condemned the arrest of its two members and demanded their immediate release.
In a statement Pradipan Khisha, organizer of UPDF Khagrachari district unit, said repression on Jumma people including UPDF has increased lately in Ramgarh-Manikchari-Guimara-
He urged all the democratic and conscientious people to raised their voices against such flagrant violations of human rights.
