A joint contingent of army and police personnel on Tuesday (October 10) arrested 8 Jumma people including five women during a search operation in Ballyachari under Guimara Upazila in Khagrachari district.
According to villagers, a group of 40 – 50 army and police personnel led by Shahadat Hossain Titu, the Officer-in-charge of Guimara police station, raided four Jumma houses at Ballyachari Rubber Plantation No. 2 at 2 a. m. and made the arrests.
The arrested Jummas included Rijendra Tripura (45) son of late Mono Ranjan Tripura; his son Sushil Tripura (19), a first year student of Ramgarh Government College; Sushil’s sister Jeshica Tripura (16), a student of class ten at Guimara High School; Riton Tripura (13), a seventh grade student of Ballyachari Saint Paul High School; Ms Sunali Chakma (40) wife of Sneha Kumar Chakma; his daughter and a SSC examinee from Guimara High School Rehena Chakma; Ms Chinta Rani Tripura (28) wife of Kiron Tripura and Ms Kamala Devi Chakma (32) wife of Biborton Chakma.
When Kamala Devi Chakma’s son Animesh Chakma wanted to know why her mother and others were being taken away, the police failed to give any satisfactory answer, merely saying, ‘There are some reasons why were are arresting them.’
