The Bangladesh Army soldiers conducted a raid and search at the home of a local public representative early this morning in Panchhari village of Kaukhali upazila, Rangamati district.

The incident occurred today, Thursday (August 7, 2025), at around 4:45 a.m.

The affected public representative is Shashi Ranjan Chakma, son of Rebati Mohan Chakma. He is a two-time elected member of Ward No. 5 under Ghagra Union Parishad No. 3.

At the time of the raid, both he and his wife were not at home. Due to market day, one of his brothers had gone to the market early in the morning with fresh produce.

Alo Chakma, the sister-in-law of Shashi Ranjan Chakma who was present at the house, told this reporter:

“The army came to our house and said they had information that there were weapons here. They said they wanted to conduct a search. I firmly told them we have no weapons. We’ve heard how during searches in hill people’s homes, there are incidents of looting and innocent people are falsely accused of possessing weapons. I asked them why they came at night instead of during the day if they just wanted to search the house.”

She further added: “The army asked everyone, including my elderly in-laws, to come outside. We didn’t go out. Later, after seeking permission, three army personnel including the officer in charge entered the house. However, they didn’t touch anything and didn’t find any illegal items in the room.”

It was also reported that a hill man wearing army uniform was present with the soldiers.

Before leaving, the army took group photos of the family members. The officer in charge of the raid reportedly expressed regret, saying: “There’s nothing we can do. We have to come as per government orders.”
