The military-backed vigilantes released Shubho Chakma, who was abducted from Nayabazar area on the Manikchari border in Khagrachari, after receiving a ransom of taka 15,000, six hours after the abduction.
Shubho Chakma was reportedly released at around 12:30 AM on the night of October 20. He had been abducted earlier that evening, at around 6:30 PM.
The victim, Shubho Chakma, is a resident of Hatikumbha Para in Ramgarh. His father’s name is Tanneram Chakma.
According to reports, after the abduction, the vigilantes took Shubho to their hideout in Manikchari. There, they initially demanded taka 30,000 for his release. After local elders intervened and negotiated, the abductors agreed to release him in exchange for taka 15,000. Once the payment was made, Shubho was released.
Shubho reported that during the abduction, the vigilantes interrogated him, asking questions such as:
- “Have you joined the UPDF?”
- “How many UPDF members are active in Ramgarh?”
Public Outrage and Local Demands
Local residents have demanded the immediate arrest and punishment of those responsible for abducting Shubho Chakma.
It is worth noting that the Mottaleb Bahini vigilante group, has been committing various crimes such as murder, abduction, extortion, and robbery in the Manikchari area for a long time, allegedly with direct support from the army. Their criminal activities have now spread into Ramgarh Upazila as well.
Some Bengali individuals are reportedly involved with this militant group, including members of the banned Chatra League (student wing of a major political party).
