The Bangladesh Army personnel, under the pretext of conducting an operation, physically assaulted two individuals—including a teenager—in the Choto Kattoli Aam Bagan area and Thanjangchara of Kattoli in Ward 7 of Longadu Union under Longadu Upazila in Rangamati.
According to sources, around 2 a.m. on Wednesday night (26 November), a large number of soldiers from the Maini Zone conducted a raid in the Choto Kattoli Aam Bagan area and the Boro Kattoli Thanjangchara area.
The soldiers reportedly woke two individuals from their sleep and interrogated them while searching for “terrorists.” When the two stated that no such persons were present, the soldiers allegedly subjected them to physical abuse.
The victims have been identified as:
- Suman Chakma (22), son of Chokh Raja Chakma, village: Thanjangchhara, Ward 2, Longadu Union;
- Jonokka Chakma (17), son of Gul Peda Chakma, village: Bengichhara, Ward 2, Longadu Union.
Locals said that the army conducted the operation using a total of six engine-powered boats last night and again this (Thursday) morning. They estimated the number of soldiers to be more than 150.
The late-night operation and alleged harassment have created fear among local residents.
Meanwhile, according to information received at 8:40 a.m. today (Thursday), soldiers carrying cooking equipment and other supplies are heading toward the area known as Aam Bagan to set up a temporary camp. It has also been reported that the Maini Zone Commander may join them there.
