Concern and anxiety have spread among local residents following the construction of a house by a Bengali settler with the aim of establishing a new settlement in the area adjacent to Nangel Para in Ramgarh, Khagrachari district, along with continued patrols by the army and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
According to local sources, on Saturday, 10 January 2026, a man named Md. Jahid Hossain (27), son of Kamal Uddin, began constructing a house near the Jumma village of Nangel Para with the intention of setting up a new settlement. However, shortly after construction began, the house was demolished by unidentified individuals.
Locals suspect that the settlers themselves demolished the house in an attempt to blame the hill people and illegally occupy the land.
Meanwhile, the day after the house was demolished, BGB members arrived in the Nangel Para area and summoned local elders, asking them to resolve the matter. At that time, the village elders informed the BGB members that they were not aware of who had demolished the house and demanded a neutral investigation.
However, on Tuesday morning (13 January), BGB members again summoned the elders of Nangel Para and had them begin reconstruction of the demolished house. According to local residents, construction work continued from morning until approximately 1:30 p.m.
On the other hand, at around 9:00 p.m. on 11 January, a unit of the Bangladesh Army arrived in two vehicles and took position near the Baro Belchari Government Primary School area. They later conducted patrols through Choto Belchari, the Globe Company mango orchard, and Taichakma Para. Army patrols and presence reportedly continued on Tuesday as well.
Due to the construction of the Bengali settler house on one side and ongoing patrols by the army and BGB on the other, concern and anxiety have spread among the local population, particularly among the hill communities.
Local residents believe that the demolition of the under-construction house may have been planned as part of an attempt to forcibly occupy the land.
There are allegations that responsibility for the demolition was placed on ordinary hill residents, and that the BGB summoned villagers and elders from Nangel Para and compelled them to rebuild the house.
Residents have called on the administration to conduct an impartial and transparent investigation and to ensure that no unpleasant situation arises from the incident.
