On 25 March, around 10:30am, two members of the Borkha Party terrorists were arrested by a group of army personnel from Goyapara area under Ramgarh Upazila in Khagrachari district while collecting tolls.
The soldiers, led by Warrant Officer Atik of Batnatali army camp under Sindukchari zone, also recovered homemade guns from them.
When Atik informed Major Mesbah of Manikchari sub-zone under Laxmichari zone about the incident, the latter reportedly advised him to release the terrorists.
While responding to the demand of the villager to punish the terrorists, Major Atik quoted Mojor Mesbah as telling him: “They (the terrorists) are our men. They cannot be touched. This is an order from the top. If they are harmed, we will lose our jobs.”
He lamented, “It is pity that we cannot take actions against them although we have nabbed them red handed.”
The arrested Borkha Party terrorists have been identified as Pheda Chakma (30) and Mazhi Chakma (35). Another terrorist, Naramya Chakma, was able to escape arrest.
Both Pheda and Mazhi were let off the hook.
The Borkha Party terrorists, created by former Laxmichari zone commander Lt. Col Shariful Islam, operate mainly in Laxmichari area, but they are now trying to expand their base in the adjoining areas.
They regularly collect tolls near Laxmichari army camp and share the booty with the army and police officers in the area.
The Borkha Party was formed as a vigilante group to check the growth of UPDF in Laxmichari.
