The United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF) has called on the Santu Larma faction of the Jana Samhati Samiti to adopt a resolution in its 9th congress, which is now underway in Rangamati, on programme of actions for putting pressure on the government to implement the CHT Accord.

The call was made today in a statement issued by Sachib Chakma, a central Committee member of the UPDF.

Mr Sachib Chakma, an influential leader of the UPDF, also asked the JSS delegates (Santu faction) to adopt a resolution endorsing the decisions taken at a dialogue held between the UPDF and JSS in 2006.

Reiterating his party’s commitment to support the full implementation of the Accord, Mr Chakma said “UPDF will extend its fullest support to the JSS if it takes up action programmes to put pressure on the government, which is reluctant to implement the accord.”

Sachib Chakma further said, “UPDF hopes that the JSS’ Santu Group will show due respect to the Jumma people’s aspirations for unity and peace and will endorse the decisions taken at the dialogues held between the UPDF and JSS in 2006.”

Reminding the delegates of the congress of the said dialogue, Sachib Chakma said three rounds of talks had been held between the two parties on 5 January, 23 February and 6 May in 2006.

“In the talks, the two parties took a number of important decisions regarding unity and compromise. However, after the third round the JSS violated the deal by re-launching terrorist attacks on UPDF. UPDF made repeated appeals to the JSS to return to the negotiating table, but for some mysterious reasons the JSS failed to pay any heed to them.” he added.
