The four leaders and activists of the Hill Women’s Federation and Hill Students’ Council, arrested on 29 August from UPDF office in Naniachar, have been released on bail.
The Rangamati Chief Judicial Magistrate, Md. Shariful Islam, yesterday ordered the release of Binoyon Chakma, president of PCP Naniachari College Unit, Titon Chakma, a PCP member, Juthika Chakma, convenor of HWF Rangamati District Unit and president of HWF Naniachar Upazila Unit and Rotna Chakma, a HWF member.
Advocate Ushamomy Khisha conducted the case on behalf of the arrested PCP and HWF members.
The HWF and PCP leaders were arrested by army personnel on 29 August from UPDF office in Naniachar. The army took them to Naniachar zone, put fire arms in their hands and then handed them over to the police.
A false case was filed against them under Arms Act. The police sent them to Rangamati jail.
Earlier on 23 August, another 7 PCP activists were arrested by army while making preparations for a rally in Naniachar.
Four of them were released later on, but the rest three were tortured in Naniachar zone and sent to jail. However, the court ordered their release a few days later.
Although hundreds of UPDF activists became victims of false arms cases in the past, the arrest and detention of any women activist on such cases is the first in the history of the struggle in CHT.
A reception will be held for the released HWF and PCP leaders and activists in Naniachar on 9 September, a HWF press release says.
The members and well wishers of all the front organisations of the UPDF and the general people of the area have been requested to attend the reception.
