An atmosphere of fear and anxiety is prevailing among local residents in various areas of Matiranga upazila of Khagrachari district due to the increased presence and activities of the army and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
According to local sources, at around 9:30 a.m. on Sunday (October 26), 20 to 30 members of the 23rd BGB Battalion, under the Jaminipara BGB Camp, took position at Moydachara Bazaar in Ward No. 7 of Amtali Union, Matiranga upazila.
Meanwhile, locals reported that around 8:00 a.m., about 30 army personnel from the Dewanpara Army Camp in Bhaibonchara Union, Khagrachari, were deployed in the Notunpara area of Ward No. 9, in the same Amtali Union.
In addition, reports indicate that around 8:00 a.m., 20 to 25 soldiers from the same Dewanpara Army Camp took position in the Heladhula area of Ward No. 8, Latiban Union, under neighboring Panchari upazila.
Locals complain that the recent increase in army and BGB activities has caused widespread concern and fear throughout the region. Many residents fear that house searches or acts of harassment could occur at any time.
A local resident said, “Every day we’re seeing army and BGB personnel taking positions in new areas. We don’t feel safe anymore.”
