Army-police attack PCP rally in Guimara: wounded 12, deatined 1

AT least 12 activists of the Hill Students’ Council (PCP) have been injured when the army and police attacked its peaceful rally in Guimara.

Another PCP activist has also been reportedly beaten and detained during the crackdown.

PCP leaders have said that members of their Guimara branch were holding a rally in front of Press Club at Guimara bazaar at 2pm on Friday when the army and police personnel attacked them without provocation.

They charged batons to disperse the participants of the rally and beat up and detained Reyal Tripura, a leader of PCP Khagrachari College unit.

The PCP members were protesting the arrest of a 16-year-old school boy and another minor by army on Thursday.

Immediately after the crackdown, the army searched the house of Aongay Marma, general secretary of Democratic Youth Forum, in Dewan Para village in Guimara.

Latest reports have said army and police have been deployed at various locations in the area.

Thuiko Ching Marma, president of PCP, a front organization of the United Peoples’ Democratic Front (UPDF) [www.updfcht.com] has condemned the attack on their peaceful rally in Guimara.

He demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Reyal Tripura and the two minor boys — Chikon Chan Chakma, 16, and Aungchi Pru Marma, 17, — arrested yesterday.
