THE police on Sunday night arrested Rupa Chakma, president of the Parbattyo Chattagram Nari Sangha’s (CHT Women’s Association) Chittagong branch, from her rented room at Bus Signal area in Chittagong.

She was produced before a court today, but the police refused to say why she was picked up.

Rupa Chakma, who works at a shoe factory in Chittagong, was elected president of the Nari Sangha’s Chittagong branch at a women conference on March 4.

Nari Sangha president Sonali Chakma in a statement condemned the arrest as ‘undemocratic and fascist’ and demanded her immediate and unconditional release.
