The condition of Bimal Tripura, who was seriously injured in a settler attack stemming from a land dispute in the Headman Para (Khalpara) area of Kamalchari Union in Khagrachari Sadar Upazila, remains critical. Due to the severity of his condition, he was referred from Khagrachari Sadar Hospital to Chattogram for advanced treatment on Wednesday evening (14 January 2026). He is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital there, where his condition is reported to be critical.
It is learned that Thaihlaong Chowdhury, a resident of Headman Para, had been involved in a long-standing land dispute with Abdul Bashir of Bhuachari village. Thaihlaong Chowdhury has maintained a mango orchard on the disputed land for the past 10–12 years. A court case regarding ownership of the land is currently ongoing. Although the Land Office had planned to conduct an investigation of the land some time ago, officials reportedly did not proceed due to threats from settlers.
Among those involved in the land dispute, Thaihlaong Chowdhury is known to be affiliated with the Awami League, while Abdul Bashir is reportedly associated with BNP politics.
Yesterday (Wednesday), Thaihlaong Chowdhury went to clear his mango orchard along with two laborers, Bimal Tripura and Milan Chakma. Upon receiving information, a group of settlers led by Abdul Bashir arrived from Bhuachari at around 3:30 p.m. and obstructed them from clearing the orchard. During an ensuing argument, the settlers allegedly attacked Thaihlaong Marma (69) and his two laborers—Bimal Tripura (37) and Milan Chakma (40)—with sharp weapons, injuring all three. It is also reported that Abdul Bashir and his two sons sustained minor injuries.
Following the incident, the injured were admitted to Khagrachari Sadar Hospital. Later, due to his critical condition, the attending physician referred Bimal Tripura to Chattogram. He sustained severe injuries after being attacked with sharp weapons. He is currently receiving treatment in extremely critical condition at a private hospital in Chattogram, where he has reportedly been placed in the ICU.
As of the time of filing this report, a unit of the Bangladesh Army was present at the scene. Local residents stated that the army had summoned the son of the orchard owner Thaihlaong Marma, along with local elected representatives and village elders, to the location.
