Indigenous residents of several areas in Panchhari Upazila of Khagrachhari have expressed fear and concern following the reported presence of armed cadres of the PCJSS Santu Group near Taraban Bhabanakendra, a Buddhist monastery, and surrounding areas.
The armed group is reportedly staying at several locations around Taraban Bhabanakendra in Chenggi Union’s Ward No. 2. Their presence has made local residents reluctant to visit the monastery, affecting the daily activities of Buddhist monks living there.
Local residents also say the Wi-Fi connection in the area was cut, causing further difficulties in communication.
The head of Taraban Bhabanakendra expressed his frustration in a brief Facebook post written in the Chakma language. He wrote, “Bek nirob, hon poran bala ei na paran dhore…,” which he explained as meaning, “Everything is silent; no one has been able to come because of fear.”
Speaking to CHT News, he said no lay devotees had come to the monastery since morning because of the situation. These devotees normally visit the monastery to prepare food, known locally as “siyong,” for the monks.
“We cannot even leave our rooms. The Wi-Fi connection has been cut, and everyone’s phones are switched off. We cannot reach anyone. We do not know whether their phones have been taken away or whether they have switched them off,” he said.
In a frustrated remark, he added, “You all be happy. You do not have to worry about us. We have nothing more to say to this nation.”
According to local residents, armed cadres of the Santu Group entered the Jagpara area early on September 3 and took up positions at several points.
They are reportedly positioned near the main road connecting Taraban Bhabanakendra and Taraban Church to Lambu Para, near Hijing Muro at the far end of Jagpara, close to shops in Jagpara, and around Jagpara Primary School. Residents said bunkers have been constructed at some of these locations.
Locals also alleged that the group has carried out random bursts of gunfire since arriving in the area, causing panic among residents.
Residents identified Sanjay Chakma, Pratuttor Chakma and Joleye Chakma Taru as members of the group who joined the Santu Group from Panchhari. They said Joleye Chakma Taru had previously served as the leader of the Thyangare Bahini.
Residents also alleged that members of the group shot and killed a cow being raised at the home of a UPDF supporter on September 3.
The reported open presence of the armed group has also raised questions about the role of the local administration. Residents have expressed frustration over what they describe as a lack of action by the authorities.
There have also been longstanding allegations that a section of the Bangladesh Army has provided direct or indirect support to the Santu Group. Some residents now suspect that such support may also be connected to the group’s reported presence in the Taraban and Jagpara areas. These allegations could not be independently verified.
Local residents have urged the administration to take immediate legal action against the armed group and restore security in the area.
