The United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) General Secretary Rabi Shankar Chakma in a statement issued today said, “A vested interest group continues to misrepresent the UPDF’s position on ‘CHT Accord’, resulting in confusions among many people.”

This is because of this that it has become necessary to clarify our party’s stance on the said accord, it added.

Rabi Shankar Chakma said, “Our party has criticized the CHT Accord, highlighting its inherent shortcomings, and expressed the view that this accord will fail to bring peace in the CHT, the position we still hold. However, despite our reservations about the accord, our party has never stood in the way of its implementation.”

He further said “let the government proves that the implementation of the CHT Accord will lead to the resolution of the CHT problems. UPDF is ready to cooperate with the government in implementing the accord.”

Criticizing the government Mr. Chakma said the Awami League government was and is never sincere in implementing the accord. “Rather, it has violated the terms of the agreement on various occasions.” he went on.

“On the other hand, apart from issuing rhetorics, the Jana Samhati Samiti has never shown its willingness to go for action programmes to force the government to implement the Accord, although UPDF pledged its full support for such programmes back in 2000.” he added.
