A group of vigilantes, backed by the military, abducted a hill woman named Painila Marma (45) from Chailla Char village under Kanchannagar Union in Fatikchhari upazila, Chattogram, on Saturday night (September 6, 2025). She was reportedly released around 1:00 PM today (Sunday, September 7).

According to local sources, around 11 PM last night, a group of 12 armed vigilantes led by Md. Masud Hossain Bappy and Ramzan Ali entered Chailla Char village and abducted Painila Marma from her home, taking her to Bottoli. It is alleged that when she resisted, the vigilantes beat her with sticks.

Painila Marma’s husband, Kosmofa Marma, is a member of the UPDF (United People’s Democratic Front).

Sources say the vigilantes kept her detained overnight and until today noon (September 7), confiscating her mobile phone before releasing her around 1:00 PM.

After her release, the vigilantes called local elder Thuichai Marma on the phone, asking him to bring Painila Marma to meet them again.

It is noteworthy that, under the direct support of the military, vigilantes led by Ramzan Ali – comprising both hill people and Bengali Muslim settlers – have long been involved in abduction, extortion, and various forms of militancy in the Bottoli and Chailla Char areas. However, the administration has taken no action against these thugs.
