Man Involved in Sexual Harassment of Indigenous Schoolgirl Handed Over to Police

An eighth-grade indigenous schoolgirl, age 14, was sexually harassed by a 45-year-old illegal settler named Md. Jasim Uddin in Sindukchari, a village in the Guimara sub-district of Khagrachari. Local residents immediately caught the perpetrator, and handed him over to the police.

The accused, Md. Jasim Uddin, is reportedly from Rahman Nagar in the Manikchari sub-district. His father’s name is the late Keramat Ali, and he works as a banana trader.

According to reports, the student was leaving her home for school on Thursday morning when the incident occurred. As it was the weekly market day at the local Sindukchari market, there was a crowd on the street. Md. Jasim Uddin took advantage of the situation and sexually harassed the student by touching her in a sensitive parts of her body. When the student immediately protested, local people came to her aid, and together with market-goers, they detained Md. Jasim Uddin.

Shortly after, a group of soldiers from the Sindukchari Army Zone arrived at the scene and tried to rescue Md. Jasim Uddin from the angry crowd. They attempted to forcibly remove the protesters, causing the situation to become tense.

Students from the area then arrived and began protesting, demanding swift justice and punishment for the perpetrator, Md. Jasim Uddin. The soldiers remained at the scene throughout the students’ protest, and the police also arrived. The standoff continued for a while.

Finally, due to pressure from the students and the public, the army was forced to hand over the accused, Md. Jasim Uddin, to the police. The police then took the accused away in their vehicle.

A case has reportedly been filed at the police station by the victim’s family.
