Prominent Bangladeshi human rights activist Nur Khan has blamed the Bangladesh Army for the attack on the Marma community in Guimara, Khagrachhari. He said, “The army opened fire indiscriminately in Guimara.”

He made this statement during an interview with Deutsche Welle on October 1. He said, “The video footage of the incident that we have seen clearly shows that the army fired indiscriminately in Guimara. Local Bengali civilians were also present with the army.”

He further added, “It wasn’t a difficult task to handle a rape case and arrest the perpetrators. But instead of doing that, when the situation deteriorated, we saw the Home Affairs Advisor shifting the blame. Just like before, when any incident occurred, it used to be blamed on BNP and Jamaat-Shibir; now they say it’s the fascists and their allies. Sometimes the blame is shifted onto a neighboring country. But the necessary steps were not taken.”

Human rights activist and women’s rights leader Khushi Kabir described the statement issued by ISPR (Inter-Services Public Relations) as one-sided.

Speaking to Deutsche Welle, she said, “If everyone involved in the rape had just been arrested, the situation would have remained under control. But instead, three people were killed, homes and businesses were attacked and set on fire. This is completely unacceptable. And the statement from ISPR was entirely one-sided. This has only deepened the mistrust among the indigenous communities. They are now even more fearful. And is it not possible to protest for justice in a rape case? We’ve seen time and again that unless there is protest, justice is not served, and the accused are not arrested.”

Nur Khan believes, “This crisis will not be resolved by blaming others. Those who are truly responsible must be identified and brought to justice. And a political solution must be sought. This must be done in the national interest.”
