Four innocent men were subjected to torture by members of the army in Moddyo Kharikaba village under Ward No. 7 of Longadu Union in Longadu Upazila, Rangamati District.

The victims have been identified as:

  1. Bimal Jyoti Chakma (30), son of Kali Kumar Chakma, resident of Middle Kharikaba village;
  2. Purna Chandra Chakma (28), son of late Sur Mohan Chakma;
  3. Supayan Chakma (27), son of Bimal Kanti Chakma; and
  4. Tapan Chakma (40), son of Juddho Mani Chakma, resident of Karlaichari village, Atarokchara Union, Longadu, Rangamati.

All four victims were reportedly working as day laborers engaged in cutting trees under a jote permit (a legal logging permit) in Moddyo Kharikaba village.

According to local sources, around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday (November 8, 2025), a group of 15–20 army personnel led by Commander Md. Anis from the Bame Longadu Army Camp raided Middle Kharikaba village.

The soldiers questioned the day laborers about so-called “terrorists” and other matters. At one point, when the soldiers asked whether any “terrorists” had eaten rice there, Bimal Jyoti Chakma replied that no terrorists had eaten there. Enraged by the response, Commander Anis allegedly attacked him and beat him severely with a stick.

It is also alleged that the soldiers similarly beat the other three men — Purna Chandra, Supayan, and Tapan Chakma.

After the assault, the army personnel stopped the tree-cutting work under the jote permit.

The incident has sparked widespread anger among local residents.

Locals said that the army, in the name of searching for so-called “terrorists,” has been unnecessarily harassing and torturing ordinary people.

They strongly condemned and protested such behavior by the soldiers and demanded an immediate end to the unjust harassment and abuse of innocent civilians.
