Armed members of the PCJSS (Santu Group) allegedly blocked a partially paralyzed schoolteacher from traveling to Rangamati for medical treatment in Kaukhali Upazila, Rangamati District, on Sunday, June 28, 2026, amid a reported hostage standoff in a nearby village.
Lipi Chakma, 45, a teacher at a UNICEF-operated Para Center and resident of Levapara village in Ghagra Union, boarded a Mahindra passenger vehicle bound for Rangamati at approximately 3:30 p.m. for a scheduled medical appointment.
The vehicle was stopped at a roadside shop in the neighboring village of Nuyo Adam, where armed group members questioned passengers about their home villages. When Chakma identified herself as a Levapara resident, she was ordered off the vehicle and told to return home.
The armed members reportedly warned that no resident of Levapara would be permitted to travel beyond Nuyo Adam, including to local markets, after village elders allegedly failed to appear for a meeting with the group earlier that day. The group is said to be holding two women abducted from Levapara and demanding a ransom of BDT 600,000 for their release.
Chakma’s husband, Subal Chandra Chakma, told CHT News that his wife has suffered from neurological complications for two years and is partially paralyzed. “She was on her way to a doctor for a routine check-up. I don’t know what will happen to her now. She feels deeply humiliated by what happened,” he said.
The reported abductions and travel restrictions have heightened tensions among Levapara residents, according to local sources.
