An armed group allegedly backed by the Bangladesh Army detained an indigenous man in the Chotobari area of Ward No. 4 in Bhaibonchhara Union, Khagrachhari, and severely beat him, according to local sources.

The victim was identified as Sen Kumar Tripura, 50, son of the late Raj Chandra Tripura, a resident of Chotobari village in Bhaibonchhara Union, Khagrachhari Sadar Upazila.

According to local sources, at around 11 a.m. on Monday, November 2, 2026, a six-member armed group led by Dipan Alo Chakma arrived in the Chotobari area on three motorcycles. The group allegedly seized mobile phones from motorcyclists and local residents along the road connecting Dewan Para, Chotobari, and Rainyabari.

The group then detained Sen Kumar Tripura, a resident of the village, and took him to its base in Dewan Para, where he was severely beaten with sticks and other blunt objects.

Sen Kumar Tripura was released at around 5 p.m. the same day. The mobile phones seized from local residents were also reportedly returned.

Meanwhile, local residents alleged that a Bangladesh Army unit entered the Chotobari–Rainyabari area around the same time and fired a burst of automatic gunfire, causing panic among residents.

The alleged joint activities of army personnel and the armed group have reportedly raised concerns and heightened fear among local residents.
