In Bakchari village of Ward 3 under Ghagra Union (Union No. 3) in Kaukhali Upazila of Rangamati district, the army conducted a search at the home of a man named Dhalumoni Chakma and detained him along with his younger brother. They were later released into the custody of local representatives and elders.

According to reports, around 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday (10 December 2025), a team of 25 soldiers led by a captain from the Kaukhali Sub-Zone entered Bakchari village via Kochukhali Headman Para.

The soldiers surrounded the house of Dhalumoni Chakma— a bamboo trader (father: late Mahendra Chakma)—and searched the premises. During the search, they found two small bottles (Tiger-brand soft drink bottles) containing “alcohol,” kept for use during a feast after harvesting. The soldiers then detained Dhalumoni and his younger brother, Subrata Chakma.

After the news spread, local representatives and respected community elders went to Dhalumoni’s house and asked the soldiers what offense the two had committed. The soldiers said alcohol had been found. The elders explained, “In our hill communities, alcohol is used for feasts in harvesting seasons and other social activities; these are not for sale.”

The soldiers then photographed the two Tiger bottles, household water bottles, and both detained brothers. They also photographed the Union Parishad member Montu Ranjan Chakma and the elders present. Afterwards, Dhalumoni and Subrata were released into the custody of the UP member and community elders.

Meanwhile, another group of 30–35 soldiers from the Ghagra Sub-Zone, led by Senior Warrant Officer Habib, moved from the Chelachara playground toward Tetultala in Bakchari’s Neech Para via Noa Adam. They later also visited Dhalumoni Chakma’s house.

As of the time this report was written, one group of soldiers had returned to Kaukhali Sadar via Neech Para, while another group was reportedly hiding in the Joutha Bagan area, Tetultala of Neech Para, and nearby forested areas.
