Four villagers from Talukdar Para in Taindong Union, Matiranga Upazila, Khagrachhari, were allegedly abducted and held hostage on Saturday by an armed group, locally known as the “Masked Vigilantes”, reportedly operating with the patronage of state forces.
According to local residents, the incident occurred on Saturday, August 22, 2026.
The four victims have been identified as:
Milon Chakma (36), son of Bhalukya Mani Chakma; Chingiri Chakma (37), son of Birshankha Chakma; Asim Chakma (32), son of Dalchandra Chakma; Tutumoni Chakma (22)
All four are residents of Talukdar Para. Milon Chakma reportedly works as a peon at Talukdar Para Government Primary School.
Local accounts state that at around 11:00 p.m. on August 21, armed assailants staying in Talukdar Para, allegedly led by Sushil Chakma, severely beat 35-year-old Lalon Chakma, son of Sahadev Chakma and a resident of the area. Lalon Chakma sustained injuries in the attack.
When news of the assault spread, outraged locals confronted the armed group to demand an explanation. An argument broke out, which quickly escalated into a physical altercation.
Following the incident, the armed group summoned the local karbari (headman), community elders, and other residents of Talukdar Para to Tetultala in Khagrachhari Sadar on Saturday, August 22. After initial discussions, the karbari and several residents were released; however, the armed group forcibly abducted the four men named above and took them to an undisclosed location, where they are being held hostage.
The captors reportedly informed the villagers that the four men would not be released unless an individual named Montosh Chakma was brought before them.
As of 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 23, the four villagers remain in captivity.
Meanwhile, latest reports indicate that the armed group has once again summoned the karbari and village elders to Tetultala today. The incident has sparked widespread anger and growing concern among local residents.
