THE local administration of Baghaichari has prevented Buddhist devotees from installing a 10 feet high statue of the Lord Buddha near Ujo bazaar at Gongaram-doar in Sajek.
According to local villagers, the Buddhist devotees had been making preparations to install a statue of the Buddha for the last few months.
“We’ve leveled the site where the statue of the Buddha is to be placed and bought bricks, cement, sand and other materials for the purpose.” a villager of Gangaram told chtnews on condition of anonymity.
“But the Baghaichari Upazila Nirbahi Officer, Sumon Chowdhury, today appeared at the site along with police and asked us not to install the statue of the Buddha.” he added.
He further said that the UNO had told them that the Border Guard Bangladesh would set up a camp there.
The Jumma villagers immediately made a protest at the UNO’s decision and held a rally at Ujo bazaar.
They told the UNO point blank that they would not accept his arbitrary and unlawful decision.
