TWO persons have been kidnapped by armed members of Santu Group in Sajek under Rangamati district, UPDF sources have said.
According to sources, a group of 10 – 12 armed men belonging to Santu Larma faction of the Jana Samhati Samiti raided Sajek before dawn today and kidnapped two villagers.
The kidnappees have been identified as Bikram Chakma, 29, son of Cherepukko Chakma of village Number 10 and Pradeep Chakma, 40, son of Ramani Mohan Chakma of village Shizokchara.
Bikram Chakma was on his way to work when he was kidnapped. “He was blindfolded and then taken away.” an eyewitness told chtnews.com on condition that he would not be named in the report.
The armed members also surrounded the house of Pradeep Chakma and abducted him at gun point.
The UPDF and Sajek Nari Samaj (Sajek Women Association) in a joint statement condemned the kidnapping of the two innocent villagers as “a dastardly act of terrorism” and demanded their immediate release.
“The struggle of the Jumma people cannot be suppressed by resorting to killings, kidnappings and disappearances.” Ompika Chakma, president of SNS and Shanti Dev Chakma of UPDF, said.
They also urged the government to take effective actions against the armed gangs sponsored by Santu Larma and to remove him from the Regional Council.
