A day laborer was allegedly assaulted by armed members of the PCJSS (Santu Group) in Ramtanu Para, Logang Union, Panchhari Upazila, Khagrachhari District, according to local sources.
The incident reportedly occurred at around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 27.
The victim was identified as Ratan Tripura, 35, son of the late Nabin Kumar Tripura and a resident of Ramtanu Para.
Residents said Ratan had returned home after completing his day’s work and eating lunch when several armed members of the PCJSS (Santu Group) arrived and summoned him to a neighboring house, where they allegedly beat him severely.
The motive for the assault remains unclear.
The incident has sparked concern among local residents, who condemned the alleged attack on an unarmed civilian. They said that assaulting an ordinary person while claiming to act in the public’s interest is unjustified and called for an end to such incidents.
Residents also alleged that an armed group of approximately 50 to 55 PCJSS (Santu Group) members has been stationed in the area for the past week. According to the local accounts, the group has been openly carrying weapons and moving through the area without any apparent action by the authorities.
Several residents questioned what they described as a lack of enforcement, stating that security forces regularly conduct operations in search of armed militants but have not taken action against the armed PCJSS members despite their alleged public presence. Some residents said this has led to speculation within the community about possible coordination between the military and the group. No evidence has been independently verified to support those claims
