An activist of the United Peoples’ Democratic Front (UPDF), Rajog Tanchangya alias Rahel, 37, was arrested on Friday from Bodhipur area near Agricultural Diploma Institute in Kudukchari.

He was in a meeting with local people when the army came and arrested him.

‘It was about 4:45 p.m. At first a white microbus pulled up in front of the shop we were in, two men got down and entered the shop and then held Rahel pointing knives at his throat and tummy,’ an eyewitness said.

He further said that the microbus had a banner, reading ‘Shikka Safar’ or excursion tour, evidently to camouflage the army’s mission.

Moments later another microbus and an army pickup showed up to back up the two men.

The army showed no warrant of arrest, and no incriminatory materials were found from the UPDF activist.

Rahel, son of Ironto Tanchangya, is a resident of Maginpara village, also known as Punorbashon, under Ghilachari Union in Rajstali Upazila, and joined UPDF in 2007, UPDF sources said.
