A Marma woman vegetable vendor was allegedly assaulted by a Bengali settler following a minor altercation at the Khagrachhari District Sadar Market.

According to eyewitnesses and local sources, the incident took place on Friday morning, July 3, 2026.

The victim has been identified as Kraiu Mogini, 39, wife of Mongkya Mog, a resident of Headman Para, Ward No. 5, Golabari Union No. 3, Khagrachhari.

A video of the incident has since circulated on social media. The footage appears to show a Bengali man physically striking the woman.

Eyewitnesses said the victim was selling vegetables at the market, as she does regularly, when she became involved in a verbal dispute with a Bengali settler over a trivial matter. The argument reportedly escalated, and the man allegedly assaulted her. She sustained injuries and suffered bleeding from her nose.

People nearby rescued the injured woman and took her to a hospital for treatment.

Although the incident briefly heightened tensions in the market, the situation was brought under control through the intervention of local residents.

Local Indigenous residents allege that Indigenous women vendors in markets across the Chittagong Hill Tracts have long faced various forms of harassment, including intimidation, financial pressure, physical abuse, and inappropriate behavior. They said markets should be safe spaces where everyone can conduct business equally, but the latest incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of women vendors.

Local residents have demanded a fair investigation into the incident, swift legal action against the alleged attacker, and stronger measures to ensure the safety of women vendors in local markets.

According to the latest reports, after the victim filed a complaint with Khagrachhari Sadar Police Station, police arrested Omar Faruk, 37, in connection with the alleged assault. Police identified him as the son of Md. Ezahar Mia from Satipara village, Demsha Union, Satkania, Chattogram. They said he is currently residing in a rented house near the Chaul Bazar area of Khagrachhari Market.
