A 23-year-old motorcycle driver was reportedly abducted by a group of masked assailants, alleged to be backed by the Bangladesh Army, in Matiranga, Khagrachhari, on Saturday afternoon. The kidnappers are reportedly demanding Tk 500,000 for his release.
The victim, Umaiyon Tripura, is the son of Jugendra Tripura from Bil Para village in Matiranga Sadar Union.
According to local sources, the incident occurred at around 1:00 p.m. on July 18, when Umaiyon was transporting a passenger to Matiranga Bazaar on his motorcycle. Witnesses alleged that a group of three to four masked men, reportedly led by Kishore Tripura, intercepted the motorcycle and forcibly abducted him.
Family members later learned that the abductors were demanding Tk 500,000 in ransom in exchange for his release. The demand was reportedly conveyed from Matiranga Bazaar.
The abduction has sparked concern and anger among local residents, who are calling for Umaiyon Tripura’s immediate and unconditional release. Community members have warned that they will stage a road blockade if he is not released without delay.
